The Comet Unit is one of the 2 Hertfordshire units and 1 Hertfordshire patrol attending the 22nd World Scout Jamboree being held in Sweden in 2011 and is made up of 30 Scouts and Explorers and 6 members of Hertfordshire Guides from across the County.
Over the course of the next year leading up to the Jamboree in Sweden next summer, unit members are regularly meeting up to get to know each other, practice camp skills, have fun and prepare for an experience of a lifetime. We have already camped, held a Ready Steady Cook evening, a pioneering day and unit BBQ and unit members have also been busy fundraising.
We don’t yet have all the information about the Jamboree but we do know:
- We will be joining 30,000 other young people from across the world for the jamboree
- The theme of the jamboree is ‘Simply Scouting’.
- Prior to the Jamboree, the 3,200 strong UK contingent will be spending 2 days together in Copenhagen.
- During the jamboree, everyone will spend 24 hours away from the jamboree site on a ‘camp in camp’ when we will be joining Swedish scouts on a camp somewhere in Sweden.
- After the Jamboree, the Unit will have 2-3 days Home Hospitality in an, as yet, unknown other country.
- There will be the chance for everyone to get involved through the ‘Join-in Jamboree’ activities, details of which will be available soon.

A hot day in May was spent at Tolmers where Unit members practiced their knotting and pioneering skills prior to trying to build 'Tower Bridge'. We hope that, with some practice and modification, we can use this as our camp gateway when we get to Sweden in 2011.
We also unveiled our Unit polo shirts, which incorporate the Unit logo, and Unit members are shown wearing these in front of part of 'Tower Bridge'. |

The Unit logo has been designed by a member of the Unit and incorporates a Comet Racer plane and the UK Contingent logo.

During our first camp at Well End, we put together and agreed a Code of Conduct to help us during our training and preparation events, as well as at the jamboree itself. A copy of the Comet Unit Code of Conduct is available here.

The first weekend in March saw 36 young people and 4 leaders descend on Well End for the first meeting of the Hertfordshire Comet Unit. Following a welcome and information session for parents and unit members, parents returned home leaving everyone else to get to know each other.

A great weekend of games, activities, cooking, talking, eating, having fun, socialising and dancing(!), with a little sleep thrown in, was a fantastic start to our jamboree experience and people are already starting to make friends. Thanks to everyone who joined in so enthusiastically. |
