The heritage of Scouting in Hertfordshire can be traced from the first meeting of Percy Everett with Baden-Powell in 1906 and their discussions on how to create a method to help boys of the day to become good citizens. It is from this point that the development of Scouting as a Movement, was planned, and implemented.

Percy Everett helped B-P plan the experimental camp on Brownsea Island in 1907, attended as a staff member and it was here that B-P asked him to plan and develop a Scout organisation in Hertfordshire. Percy Everett was publicly acclaimed by B-P as “my right hand man” and remained so until the death of B-P in 1941. Percy Everett was knighted for his work in Scouting and Guiding in 1930 and was County Commissioner of Hertfordshire, 1908-1944. He died in 1952.

As County Archivist my main role is to manage and display items of historical interest in the County Scout Museum and provide support to individuals, Groups and Districts who need help in tracing their history. I am assisted by a team of seven experienced and qualified people who act collectively as “The History and Heritage Support Team”.

During 2008 I was able to assist twelve Scout Groups who celebrated their centenary. If you need help in tracing your heritage in 2010 or beyond and need relevant items from the County Archives for a display, please do not hesitate to contact me.

If you are contemplating planning your centenary and want the best results, I advise getting a team together at least two years ahead. If you would like me to advise how to go about this or give support at the occasional meeting, please just ask.
