Hertfordshire Scouts has a strong water activities section organising sailing and canoeing opportunities for young people. We offer instructor training as well as RYA and BCU certification. The County also maintains a number of craft for use in Scout water activities. With the welcome return to Fairlands Lake in Stevenage, the 2009—10 Winter Canoeing programme has just been launched. Monthly Sunday morning training sessions will be running October to March, open to all Scouts, Guides, Rangers, Explorer Scouts, Scout Network Members and Leaders.
Training courses will be run for British Canoe Union qualifications for beginners and intermediate paddlers, to prepare for the new one and two star awards, which involve the use of both kayak and open boat. River trips and testing will be organised at a later date for those who wish to become qualified.
These sessions provide an excellent opportunity for potential and novice leaders to practise their coaching skills under supervision, and any prospective leaders are urged to come along. On shore help would also be appreciated in organising groups and equipment.

The BCU have launched new performance awards and made major changes to the Star award scheme and Coaching award scheme. Mike Tullberg, County Canoeing Advisor, gives an overview of the new schemes. |
